Harry Kane was punished for a rare off night in front of goal as Bayern Munich suffered a surprise 2-1 loss by Inter Milan in the Champions League.
Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Davide Frattesi stunned Vincent Kompany‘s side at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night despite Thomas Muller appearing to have spared them from defeat after netting in the 85th minute.
Bayern dominated the opening half hour but found themselves behind against the run of play after Inter’s first effort on target just before the break.
Marcus Thuram flicked the ball onto Martinez’s path and the striker kept his composure to lash into the roof of the net with the outside of his boot.
At the other end, Kane, who had squandered a golden opportunity to make the breakthrough earlier in the half, could only watch on in dismay.
The striker was unusually wasteful but his team-mates, other than Muller and his late intervention, were also guilty of wasting promising openings.

Harry Kane endured a rare off-day in front of goal as Bayern Munich lost to Inter Milan

Kane curled Bayern’s best effort of the Champions League tie against the outside of the post

The striker is aiming to end his trophy drought but Bayern face a tough task at the San Siro
Michael Olise forced goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who was equal to all but one of Bayern’s seven efforts on target, into a fine stop and Kane nodded the rebound wide.
Kane then should have put Bayern in front after Benjamin Pavard cheaply lost the ball.
Olise moved into the box and slipped through Kane on the opposite side, but the frontman’s effort curled away from goal before striking the outside of the far post.
That meant the home crowd were left stunned when Inter broke the deadlock instead, although they looked to have spared their blushes when Muller levelled it up late on.
The 35-year-old announced last week that he would be leaving the club in the summer after 25 years, and he finished from close range after Konrad Laimer’s low cross.
But there was still time for one more twist.
Inter quickly broke up the field on the counter and Carlos Augusto’s delivery was converted by substitute Frattesi, handing the Italians the crucial advantage.
The home loss was Bayern’s first in the competition since 2021 and leaves them with a daunting task at the San Siro as they bid to lift the trophy at their own ground.
