Rory McIlroy’s ex-fiancee Caroline Wozniacki has been speaking about her former flame at The Masters and it’s safe to say she hasn’t been full of praise for the Northern Irishman
Tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, who was once engaged to Rory McIlroy, appeared to take a subtle jab at her ex during the Masters.
McIlroy’s week has been a whirlwind, with his wife Erica Stoll and their adorable daughter Poppy stealing hearts at the Par 3 contest.
However, McIlroy’s game took a dramatic nosedive after an “inexcusable” mistake on the opening day, only to bounce back impressively on Friday and Saturday, leading by two shots.
Wozniacki, who was in a relationship with McIlroy for three years from 2011, followed the events closely. The golfer had popped the question to the then world No.1 tennis player in December 2013, but notoriously called off their engagement over the phone shortly after wedding invites were sent out.
Now, more than ten years post their breakup, Wozniacki joined ESPN at Augusta National, musing on the importance of the Masters. Speaking on Friday, she commented: “As an athlete, I think there’s some places that are so iconic that are on the bucket list, and this and Wimbledon are so special,” reports the Express.
“There’s so much tradition here. When you arrive at the premises, there’s just something about not having your phone, really being in the moment.
“You see everything. It’s just so beautiful, and to be able to be here with my husband and enjoying it, just the two of us, no kids, no distractions, it’s really, really nice.”
Wozniacki has openly shared her intrigue with the challenges that top athletes encounter, especially in golf, confessing she’s captivated by watching legends like McIlroy buckle under pressure. “There’s so much pressure here, it’s the small margins.
“These greens are so difficult, so if you don’t hit it at the perfect spot, you go from being in a position for maybe going for a birdie to being lucky getting a bogey,” she remarked.
“Watching someone who is so good at their craft I think has always been very inspiring, whether it’s tennis, golf, at work, whatever it is. As a spectator, it’s always fun to see when the best in the world are struggling, and that’s what you get here.”
The ex-tennis ace’s observations come amid social media buzz suggesting she was hinting at McIlroy’s performance after he posted an even 72 on Thursday and sidestepped the press afterwards.
Twitter was ablaze with reactions, one user quipped, “Caroline Wozniacki broke Rory,” while another jabbed, “@espn y’all are messy for interviewing Caroline Wozniacki while Rory is struggling.”
A keen-eyed fan highlighted the coincidence of McIlroy’s upturn: “Rory birdies his last two holes at the same time ESPN is doing him dirty.”
