Moment hero passersby rescue injured officer from overturned police van after horror smash

A hero passersby rescued an injured officer from an overturned police van after it was struck by another vehicle. 

The first responder was on her way to an emergency in a marked van on Friday afternoon when the collision happened at a junction in Yardley, Birmingham

A startling video shows the overturned vehicle lying on its side with its siren still wailing.

Bystanders can be seen standing on the motor, helping the police officer out of the wreckage, as reported by NeedToKnow.

Two men assist the officer down from the van while another also helps.

The officer’s injuries were not life threatening.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police said: ‘We’re investigating after a vehicle collided with a police van shortly before 2.50pm on Friday on the Coventry Road, at its junction with Forest Road, Yardley.

‘Our van was on blue lights responding to an incident when it was struck.

‘The vehicle stopped at the scene.

‘An officer was taken to hospital with injuries which are classed as non-life threatening. No-one else was injured.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said: ‘We were called at 2.48pm to a road traffic collision involving a car and a van at the junction of Coventry Road and Forest Road in Yardley, Birmingham.

‘One ambulance and two paramedic officers attended the scene.

‘Upon arrival we found three patients, the first was assessed and had sustained serious injuries which were not life threatening.

‘She received treatment at the scene before being conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for further treatment.

‘A second and third patient did not require treatment from ambulance staff.’
