The demand for penis prostheses has massively grown with a record number of UK men receiving ‘bionic willy operations’ – some of which involve putting a water pump in the scrotum

More than 600 men in the UK had bionic willy operations last year – costing £9,000 a pop. A record number of 607 men had the operations last year, data revealed.

The procedures are carried out when other aids to help men get erections fail, including Viagra. The operations cost the NHS over £4million with 450 taking place each year, but the rise last year would have cost around an extra £1.4million.

There are different options for men that want to go under the knife – including one where flexible rods are put into their willies so they can bend them into place. In another op men can have water pumps placed into their scrotums to pump up their penises.

The average age of men having the procedure was 57 in 2024, and there were 30 cases of men having it in their 30s and 46 aged over 70.

Consultant urologist Gordon Muir at London Bridge Hospital, said: “Most of these men have significant problems such as prostate cancer or diabetes.”

Medical history was made in 2014 in South Africa when surgeons made a successful penis transplant.

The operation took nine hours and involved doctors at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town and others from Tygerberg Hospital.

A range of men have since undergone the procedure, meaning many of them could lose their virginity.

The man from 2014 had developed gangrene from a botched circumcision and was left with less than an inch of his penis, but he is now able to get an erection and has a new lease of life.

Another man – Mohammed Abad from Edinburgh – was given a £70,000 bionic penis and was finally able to lose his virginity after he lost his genitals from being dragged under a car as a child.

But sadly an operation to extract his sperm failed after a specimen from his remaining testicle.

He said he is desperate for children.

Another man, Lee Carter, 51, from the UK, waited to meet the right woman before having sex for the first time as a man.

He said he spent 40 years in the wrong body and said he had a £60,000 male body which was a “dream come true”.
