Moto GP world champion Jorge Martin’s girlfriend could only watch on in horror as he was hospitalised following a terrifying crash.

Martin, 27, suffered a brutal crash at the Qatar Grand Prix after he fell off his bike and was hit by Fabio Di Giannantonio right behind him. The Team Aprilia driver was hospitalised with lung problems and broken ribs.

On lap 14 of the race, Martin slid off the outside of the curb in a fast right-hand bend and fell off his bike. However, Di Giannantonio was unable to avoid his competitor as he attempted to steer around him.

Di Giannatonio’s front wheel hit Martin on the back as he slid across the asphalt. Martin eventually came to a stop off the track and was visibly winded and he hunched over in pain.

Worrying images of Martin’s crash and him on the ground afterwards were shown live before the TV coverage switched to show his girlfriend Maria Monfort Matutes covering her face with her hands in shock.

Speaking after the race, Di Giannantonio recalled: “He was right in front of me for a while, I was pretty close to him and, of course, tried to overtake him.

“The moment he fell, his body was completely in front of my bike. And then—well—at over 200 km/h, more or less. If it wasn’t 200, then 160 or 180, something like that. It’s just a very fast corner.”

He continued: “I had no chance to avoid him—so I touched him. I was thinking about him the whole time because I was very worried. I had goosebumps because that was the worst scene of my life.”

Martin was immediately taken to the medical centre and later to the hospital. He was diagnosed with pneumothorax, which refers to the accumulation of air in the pleural space, between the lungs and chest wall, and broken ribs.

The Spaniard’s pneumothorax was so severe that a drain had to be inserted to actively remove the air and relieve the pressure on his lungs. Martin will remain in hospital for a few days under observation, with his return to the track unknown.
