Marc Guehi to Liverpool switch collapses regardless of star finishing medical

Marc Guehi’s proposed transfer to Liverpool is off.

The England international was set to leave Crystal Palace to complete a deadline day move to Liverpool worth £35million. However, multiple sources have now reported that the deal has collapsed despite a deal sheet being submitted.

Guehi’s potential move to Anfield wasn’t sorted before the 7pm deadline on Monday, and a deal sheet was lodged in a bid to get the deal over the line. But it’s reported that Palace were unable to sign a replacement in time. And the Eagles therefore withdrew from the deal.

Guehi had agreed terms on a five-year contract and had completed a medical in London.

Chairman Steve Parish had admitted that the 25-year-old’s future had to be resolved this summer, with Guehi in the final 12 months of his contract at Selhurst Park and seemingly unwilling to sign a new deal.

However, manager Oliver Glasner made it clear that he opposed Guehi’s sale this summer, especially so close to the deadline. Glasner had insisted that his captain would only be allowed to leave if an appropriate replacement was signed.

Palace did sign another defender on deadline day – 19-year-old Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse on a £20.8m deal.

The Eagles also moved for Brighton defender Igor Julio on loan for the season, but the Brazilian rejected Palace to instead join West Ham, despite him undergoing a medical at Palace. West Ham have submitted a deal sheet in the hope of getting the signing over the line.

Speaking after Palace’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Sunday, in which Guehi scored, Glasner reiterated his stance on the England international’s situation.

He said: “He’s so professional and it was clear he would play today.

“I can say it with clarity, and I said it to the chairman that it’s nothing to do with Oliver Glasner but we need to keep Marc to play a successful season.

“We had a meeting in March where we talked about the situation so again we know how the situation is and we have an agreement that we could sell Marc if we have the right replacement in. We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season to be independent from this situation.

“That was on July 9 (the season started), it’s August 31 and there is no replacement in the building so it’s clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled that means we can’t sell Marc.

“It’s not a wish or gift for Oliver Glasner, it’s necessary for playing a successful season. We had a great start and I think our fans deserve to have the best players available. I know if we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He loves the club and team, he feels the appreciation and we feel the same from his side. That’s why I have to say we need to keep him.”

Guehi joined Palace in 2021 from Chelsea, making 155 first-team appearances and captaining the club in the FA Cup final against Manchester City in May – lifting the club’s first major trophy.
