Wrexham break silence on Phil Jones after ex-Man Utd star noticed at stadium

Phil Jones was in attendance as Wrexham were beaten 3-1 by QPR on Saturday, sparking rumours that the former Manchester United star could be set for a sensational return to action

Speculation linking former Manchester United defender Phil Jones with a potential move to Wrexham as either a player or coach has been firmly dismissed.

Rumours went into overdrive last weekend when the ex-England centre-back was seen watching the Red Dragons’ 3-1 loss to Queens Park Rangers alongside Hollywood co-owner Ryan Reynolds. The 33-year-old’s appearance with the Deadpool star in a hospitality suite at the Racecourse Ground fuelled suggestions he might be considering a shock comeback from retirement to help Wrexham navigate their challenging start to Championship life.

Jones departed United in 2023 following a 12-year stint at Old Trafford, taking a year away from football before hanging up his boots for good. Since retiring, he has moved into coaching with United’s youth system, which also sparked whispers that he could be eyeing a switch to Wrexham’s academy setup or even lined up as a potential replacement for manager Phil Parkinson.

However, club director Shaun Harvey has now poured cold water on these claims, revealing that Jones was simply attending as a guest and neighbour of chief executive Michael Williamson.

“Poor old Phil Jones came as a guest of Michael Williamson to the game, because they live very close together,” the former EFL chief executive said on the Fearless in Devotion podcast.

“If we had won that game on Saturday, nobody would have cared less that he was there. Then all of a sudden, it’s ‘What’s this conspiracy that’s going on,’ because Phil Jones is watching a game.

“I can officially confirm that Phil Jones was enjoying his day at Wrexham long before the actual result, and wasn’t there for any other purpose than to extend his learning experience as he’s now a former footballer.

“There were probably other ex-footballers and ex-managers there who weren’t in the Betty Buzz Suite, but it’s just easy to build a story or a narrative that suits an agenda.”

Hailed as a bright prospect early in his career, Jones secured a £16.5m move from Blackburn Rovers to United in 2011. He went on to claim the Premier League crown during Sir Alex Ferguson‘s farewell campaign at Old Trafford.

Persistent injury problems plagued much of his playing career, and the centre-back eventually fell out of favour before departing. At the beginning of the 2023/24 season, Jones accepted a coaching role within United’s youth setup.

Meanwhile, Reynolds has attended two Wrexham home matches so far this term, but is still waiting to witness his side claim victory after watching a 3-2 defeat to West Brom in August. Phil Parkinson’s team have managed to collect just four points from their opening five Championship fixtures, leaving them 21st in the standings, merely one point clear of the drop zone.

Reports at the weekend suggested that discussions had already taken place regarding the manager’s future in light of Wrexham’s shaky start, but Harvey has refuted these claims. In addition to Jones, Reynolds was also accompanied on Saturday by actor Colin Hanks, son of Hollywood heavyweight Tom Hanks. The pair recently collaborated on a documentary about Canadian comedy icon John Candy.
