The Carolina Reaper chilli pepper was the hottest in the world as recently as 2023 but now it is giving one creamy supermarket staple a big hit
The Carolina Reaper has a fearsome reputation. Once the world’s hottest pepper – losing its title to the Pepper X just two years ago – it is often seen as something of a challenge to eat.
However it has now hit the supermarket shelves in a mainstream product that is used by young and old alike. Primula Cheese says it has launched its “hottest yet” by combining the fiery pepper with its creamy offering and asking fans “can you take the heat?”
Available from today exclusively in Iceland Primula Carolina Reaper aims to encourage trial of bold flavour experiences with the brand message: “Don’t Ask Why, Just Try”. Lindsey Simpson, Primula NPD Manager, said: “We’re thrilled to introduce our boldest flavour innovation yet.
“The Carolina Reaper is renowned globally for its intense heat, and pairing it with our signature creamy cheese delivers a truly daring taste experience. This limited-edition launch reflects our commitment to pushing flavour boundaries and responding to adventurous consumer trends. We’re eager to see how shoppers embrace the heat!”
And fans love the idea. Posting on instagram Dana said: ” Obsessed is an understatement.” Charlotte said: “Incredible” and Meg added:”this looks brilliant.”
Others were equally keen but had some reservations. Jilly said: “Ooooh. Not sure I can but I’ll give it a go.”
The Carolina Reaper was developed by American breeder Ed Currie. It is bright red and gnarly – definitely not one of the prettiest chilli peppers.
It was the hottest chili pepper in the world according to Guinness World Records from 2013 to 2023 before Pepper X, also created by Ed Currie, took the title.
Testing by Winthrop University in South Carolina during the certification process previously showed an average heat level of 1,641,183 Scoville Heat Units (SHU) for a given batch of Carolina Reaper peppers. This is compared with usual supermarket Bell peppers which have a 0 SHU.
Posting the launch on Instagram Primula said: “Heat lovers, this one’s for you. Launching exclusively in Iceland Foods on Friday is Primula Cheese & Carolina Reaper.
“A four chilli spice, this is our hottest cheese yet. Can you take the heat?”
But aside from spreading it on bread others had recipe ideas to try out. Ellie said: “Could be great with pasta – just add it to the pan of hot pasta and it will make a brilliant creamy sauce with an extra kick. Ideal for @slimmingworld followers.”
While Jasmine added: “Picturing this topped on a chilli nachos.” The cheese comes with a RRP of £1.85 and is on sale now.
