The bloodbath horror happened on Wednesday morning at a Dallas field office for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and saw a sniper shoot around four people before turning his gun on himself
A gunman has killed at least two migrants and wounded a third before shooting himself at a US immigration centre. The bloodbath horror happened on Wednesday morning at a Dallas field office for US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said there have been multiple injuries and fatalities in the shooting, adding on X: “Details are still emerging but we can confirm there were multiple injuries and fatalities.”
The total number of fatalities and injuries remains unclear. Local media reported “three or four others had been shot” and that multiple victims were critically injured. And CNN reported that at least two migrants were shot, two sources had told them.
The sniper, who police sources described as a white man, shot himself dead as cops closed in on him, Fox4 reported. He is believed to have been perched on the roof of a nearby immigration attorney’s office.
A massive police presence was scrambled to the scene, with dozens of cop cars and ambulances pictured nearby and major roads near the centre closed off. Traffic cameras near the scene show six lanes of a normally busy freeway completely empty, with cars and semi-trailers ground to a halt on an interstate exit.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons said on CNN on Wednesday that three people were shot, all of whom were taken to a hospital. He did not specify who the three people were. He added: “It could be employees, it could be civilians that were visiting the facility, it could be detainees. At this point, we’re still working through that.”
The shooting comes after a man was arrested last month for threatening ICE officers with what the individual claimed to be a “detonator” on his wrist in Dallas, Texas.
Bratton Dean Wilkinson, 36, arrived at the reporting entrance of the Dallas Field Office and claimed to have a bomb in his backpack at approximately 6.37pm on August 25. He was taken into custody by local law enforcement and charged with making terroristic threats.
And it is the third time an ICE or Customs and Border Protection facility has been targeted by gunfire in Texas this year. On July 4, a group of assailants targeted the Prairieland Detention Center, near Fort Worth, in what authorities described as a coordinated attack.
It left a local police officer shot in the neck. The officer survived and more than a dozen people have been charged for their alleged roles in the attack.
Days later, a 27-year-old man with a rifle and tactical gear was killed by police after he opened fire on a Border Patrol facility in McAllen. Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, and dozens of rounds were exchanged between the shooter and law enforcement.
