The general consensus is that sport and politics should never mix, and Gary Neville is living proof of why.

Sky Sports has been hit with a barrage of criticism and pressure to sack Neville, following his dimwitted outburst against ‘angry middle-aged white men’.

The former England and Manchester United defender sparked a fearsome backlash for his diatribe about Britons hanging Union Jack flags to lampposts. Claiming it was being “used in a negative fashion”.

He explained how he feels the nation is “being turned on each other” by “angry, middle-aged white men who know what they’re doing”.

Neville is a fine football pundit. He played at the highest level and knew what it took to succeed in a dressing room governed by Sir Alex Ferguson.

His opinions on the game are strong, and quite often make sense. Which is what we need from a pundit.

But Neville has made the mistake of straying off-side, to spout more views on a subject he is clearly uneducated in.

And anyone who gives someone like Joey Barton an invitation to ridicule him on social media, needs to give his head a serious wobble.

Or do something even better, and just stick to talking about football.
