Keir Starmer will face a PMQs grilling after a sex offender who was mistakenly released from prison was deported back to Ethiopia.
Hadush Kebatu sparked a two-day manhunt after he was wrongly let out of HMP Chelmsford on Friday, instead of being sent to an immigration detention centre. He was deported on Tuesday night, with no right to return to the UK.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said her department had failed to meet the “crises” it has faced in recent years and is “not yet fit for purpose”.
She told the BBC: “[The Home Office] obviously deals with emergency and crises issues on a regular basis, and I think over a long period of time has been found not to be able to rise to the scale of the challenge of those crises and those emergencies.”

Hadush Kebatu was forcibly deported to Ethiopia and given a £500 payment after threatening to disrupt his removal, it is understood.

The Ethiopian national was deported overnight, and will have no right to return to the UK, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed this morning.
