Cycling has, at heart, always been a sport for traditionalists.

It’s why inconspicuous roads dotted across Northern Europe hold so much fame – and why they will do for many more years to come.

Innovation, especially in road cycling, has always been almost sneered at, and it’s only in the past decade that it has started to be truly embraced.

And the sport could be revolutionised once more, with Italian brand Q36.5 unveiling their “game-changing” product on Tuesday (November 4) in collaboration with SRM in the Italian Dolomites.

The two parties have revealed their pedal and shoe system that reduces stack height by over 8mm relative to existing systems in an “evolutionary leap in pedaling performance and race feel”.

Pedal stack height is the distance from the centre of the pedal axle to the surface where your cleat contacts the pedal.

While the shoe stack height is the total thickness of the shoe’s sole, including the insole, midsole, and outsole.

Q36.5 founder Luigi Bergamo explained that he discovered the performance advantages while testing with a reduction in pedal stack height.

He had achieved this with an ultrathin sole construction and intelligent engineering of cleat attachment components. However, SRM’s founder Ulrich Schoberer wanted to go even further.

And he wanted “to design a pedal that reduced stack height even further,” that “other manufacturers – with the notable exception of Speedplay – were totally ignoring the possible performance gains”.

They claim the system will “offer the most direct and efficient power transfer on the market”.

The SRM pedal will come in one version, without a power meter, and will be available commercially exclusively with the Q36.5 Unique Pro Shoes soon.
