Which? has compared the cost of a 70-item shopping list at the big four supermarkets and discounters
Lidl has been crowned the UK’s cheapest supermarket knocking Aldi off the top spot, consumer watchdog Which? has said. A basket of 70 items at Lidl averaged £120.46 in October, or £120.38 for members of its loyalty scheme, Lidl Plus.
The cost of an identical shop at Aldi came to an average of £121, Which? found. Aldi has been crowned the cheapest supermarket 22 times in the past 24 months.
The list of 70 items comprised both branded and own-brand products, including Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk and butter, reports the Mirror. Last month, Tesco shoppers would have forked out £134.89, or £133.38 with a Clubcard, while the total bill at Sainsbury’s was £139.68, or £136.79 with a Nectar card.
Which? also compares prices for an extended list of 187 items. Aldi and Lidl are excluded from this comparison due to their smaller product range compared to other supermarkets.
Asda once again emerged as the cheapest for the larger shop, costing £469.11. The same shop would have set back Tesco Clubcard shoppers £476.11, and Morrisons customers £481.34 with a More loyalty card.
Waitrose was the priciest for both the smaller shop, averaging £163.04 in October, and the larger shop. The analysis from Which? takes into account special offer prices and loyalty prices where applicable, but excludes multibuys.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: “Lidl has bagged the top spot as the UK’s cheapest supermarket for the second time in just a few months, according to our latest price analysis, showing that it can beat Aldi even for those who aren’t signed up to its discount scheme.
“The longer list of groceries shows that Asda continues to be one of the UK’s cheapest supermarkets and a good option for those who want to choose from a larger range of branded goods. High food prices are still a growing concern for many households, especially as we approach Christmas, but our analysis shows it pays to shop around; simply choosing one supermarket over another could save you 26%.”
