A devastating tornado in Brazil’s southern state of Parana has claimed the lives of six people and injured over 400, according to officials. The tornado, reaching speeds exceeding 155mph, demolished dozens of homes, leading the government to declare an emergency in the affected area.
State officials announced in a statement that at least one person was unaccounted for hours after the tornado made landfall. Five of those who lost their lives were adults, and the sixth was a 14 year old girl.
The government reported that 437 individuals, including children and expectant mothers, had received medical care at hospitals and on-site units. Out of these, at least 10 underwent surgery, and nine remained in a critical condition.
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his solidarity with the victims on social media.
