The husband and wife, from Australia, said it was like a ‘horror movie’ waking up to find the intruder – who was described as having ‘superhuman strength’ as she battled the pair
A peaceful neighbourhood was shattered after a terrifying home invasion horror that saw a woman armed with scissors breaking in and launching a frantic fight for survival.
Steve and his wife Jane recalled how their tranquil life on Russell Island in Queensland, Australia, turned into a living nightmare when a stranger appeared in their home just as they were waking up.
“I get out of bed, and then when I walk out, I see her standing in the hallway, holding this knife,” Jane revealed, referring to the weapon later identified as scissors.
CCTV footage captured the chaos as Jane slammed the bedroom door shut, only for the intruder to attack it.
Steve bravely held the door firmly, as Jane frantically called for help, and a brutal struggle ensued, with the woman kicking chairs out from under the table and fighting with superhuman strength. “It was exhausting. It’s like she had superpowers because she was very strong,” Steve said.
Amid the chaos, Jane managed to find the scissors while staying on the line with emergency services, reports news.com.au. “It’s like, for ages… I
” keep saying, ‘Hurry up, please, we need police.’ And the lady said, ‘They’re coming,’” Jane recounted.
For a terrifying 25 minutes, Steve kept the woman restrained until the cops arrived and arrested the 40-year-old intruder.
“Our hands are together, and I said, ‘Make sure you cuff the right one,’” Steve joked as he spoke to ‘A Current Affair’.
Queensland Police confirmed the woman was trespassing, armed with scissors, and was found in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine. Steve’s security cameras, installed just a month ago for medical reasons after fainting spells, captured the entire ordeal for all to see.
“Well, we’ve only had it there for a month, so we’re lucky we got it,” Steve said. The couple, who once enjoyed the easygoing island lifestyle, now say they feel unsafe.
“Easygoing life here … We’ve always left the house unlocked.
“Not anymore. So it’s a different place,” Steve admitted.
“It was like a horror movie, I guess … Although all I had to do was hold the door closed cause I didn’t know what was going on.
“I had no idea how many people were here,” he added. When the attacker moved toward the back door, Steve took action.
“I’ve got to do what I’ve got to do to protect Jane, us. There was seconds, there wasn’t long at all,” he explained.
Emerging from the bedroom in his underpants, Steve confronted the woman, risking everything to keep his family safe. Reflecting on the trauma, Jane described the ordeal as “very scary”.
“Until now, I’m still panicking. Did you lock the door?
“Did you lock the gate?” she said. Steve also urged others to stay vigilant in the face of rising crime.
“Lock your doors. Stay safe.
“You just never know anymore. Sadly, you don’t, and that is what’s scary.”
Cops say charges are expected to be brought against the woman soon.
