Travel chaos as THREE main motorways closed and big diversions introduced in

It might be worth going back to bed this morning, as three major motorways are closed this morning. The M20 between junctions eight and nine eastbound, the M1 between 36 and 37 in both directions and the M6 between 41 and 42 are all closed – causing major disruptions.

The first closure on the M20 is due to a road traffic collision, with the M1 interruption is for the same reason. However the M6 issues in Cumbria are down to flooding and have seen the major motorway closed in both directions.

A National Highways spokesman said: “Flooding was originally reported at 02:42 on the M6 junctions 41- and 42. At approximately 03:55 this flooding had spread to all three lanes on the northbound and the carriageway had to be fully closed.

Several roads are closed

“Latest update is that it is now affecting lane 3 on the southbound as well. A low impact rain warning was sent by the MET OFFICE affecting Cumbria and the North East until 11am. Flood Patrols were already in place.

“The flooding is from nearby fields and therefore will be difficult to clear until weather conditions improve. There is currently a full closure of the Northbound carriageway and a lane 3 closure on the Southbound.”

There are several diversions in place, as a result.

M20 between J8 and J9

  • Road users travelling eastbound are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit the M20 at J8 and take the third exit at the roundabout and at the next roundabout take the first exit on to the A20

  • Remain on the A20 until the junction with Fougeres Way where it will will turn northwards towards J9 of the M20 and rejoin the M20 eastbound at J9.

M1 between J36 and J37

  • Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the hollow triangle on road signs:

  • Leave the M1 at J37 and at the roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A628.

  • Follow the A628 for approx. 5 miles to the roundabout with the A629 and take the 1st exit onto the A629.

  • Continue for approx. 6 miles to the junction with the A616 and turn left onto the A616.

  • Follow the A616 back to the M1 southbound J35A and take the 1st exit to rejoin the M1 southbound.

M6 between J41 and J42

  • Diverted traffic is advised to follow the solid triangle diversion symbol:

  • Exit the M6 northbound at J41 and take the 4th exit at the roundabout onto the B5303 eastbound (signposted A6)

  • At Stoneybeck roundabout, take the A6 northbound

  • Continue straight on through Plumpton and High/Low Hesket

  • Re-join the M6 northbound at J42
