BREAKING Boy, 2, dies being ‘strangled by his jumper’ at nursery as air ambulance lands

A young boy has died after being “strangled by his own jumper” in a nursery garden. The horror accident killed two-year-old Leonardo Ricci who was found by his playschool carers in Bibbiena, near Arezzo, central Italy.

The boy was running around the lawn of the Ambarabà Ciccì Coccò nursery at around 11.30am and while playing near a tree, part of his sweatshirt got tangled around a branch. Leonardo was found unresponsive by horrified nursery workers who called the emergency services.

Medics gave CPR for more than an hour but failed to revive the boy, La Stampa reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An air ambulance was en route but it was too late. The nursery was evacuated by police and a cordon was set up.

Groups of locals are seen weeping at the gates in footage from the scene. Bibbiena’s mayor, Filippo Vagnoli, visited the nursery as the community comes to terms with the horror death.

Prosecutors have launched a manslaughter investigation and the nursery will remain closed until at least next week to assist the prove.

The Koiné cooperative, which manages the nursery, said: “We have no words that can soothe the excruciating pain of the parents and family of the child who lost his life this morning.

“The tragedy is also our grief, because we feel the children who greet us with a smile every morning as our own.

“Our staff, shocked and distraught by the tragedy, have made themselves available to the investigators.”

Meanwhile, a woman and her unborn baby have tragically died after being hit by a vehicle while walking across the entrance to a car park.

The woman was with her husband and three-year-old son when she was hit while walking across the entrance to a car park on George Street in Hornsby, north Sydney, around 8pm on Friday. A teen driver with a provisional licence has now been charged in connection and could face up to 10 years in prison.

A Kia Carnival was reportedly turning into the car park of the Hornsby Railway Station when it stopped to let them pass. A white BMW driven by a P-plater allegedly then crashed into the back of the Kia, which then hit the woman.

Paramedics treated the 33-year-old, who was eight months pregnant, before she was rushed to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition. Tragically, neither the mum or baby could be saved.

NSW Police Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Assistant Commissioner David Driver said the crash was “very confronting” for first responders. He said: “It’s particularly tragic when people pass away and indeed when there’s children involved. This is a terrible, terrible story.”

P-plate driver Aaron Papazoglu was taken to hospital before being allowed to go home to nearby Wahroonga. Police investigating a dashcam video of the incident arrested the 19-year-old at around 12.45am on Millewa Avenue in Wahroonga.
