Massive explosion subsequent to main Argentina airport sees flights cancelled as 22 are rushed to hospital

A massive explosion next to a major airport in Argentina has seen flights cancelled and 22 people rushed to hospital.

The blaze took hold last night in an industrial area south of Buenos Aires, the country’s capital, officials said, as firefighters battled the flames. 

The mayor of Ezeiza, where events unfolded, said the cause of the explosion was yet  unknown.

‘We are trying to control [the fire] and extinguish it but have not been able to so far’, Gaston Granados, mayor of the capital, said. 

‘The explosions and fire breaking out in the different factories are huge.’

Footage showed thick smoke pouring out of the industrial area, as a local hospital director confirmed they were treating 22 injured people. 

The fire broke out after an explosion in Ezeiza, a capital city south of Buenos Aires in Argentina 

The industrial area is next to a major airport, which has had to cancel flights following the incident

‘It is a complex fire. It will be a long fire,’ Fabian Garcia, the civil defence director for Buenos Aires, said. 

According to local media reports, five factories were hit by the explosions and fire.

The industrial area houses buildings producing tires, chemical products, and other goods.
