Manchester United have been given the green light to sign Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes in the January transfer window, with the Brazilian coming highly recommended by Matheus Cunha
Manchester United have received backing for their pursuit of Wolves star Joao Gomes from Matheus Cunha, who has described the Brazilian as “unbelievable”.
Fresh reports indicate that the Red Devils are eyeing up Gomes for a potential January swoop.
Speculation has even suggested that a £44million package could secure the Brazilian’s services at Old Trafford in the New Year – though Wolves maintain he’s not available as they battle to preserve their Premier League status.
Gomes has been on United’s radar previously, with talk gathering momentum as the January transfer window draws nearer.
United are hunting for midfield reinforcements, with several candidates under consideration, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba and Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson.
With speculation mounting, United might be enticed to make their move for Gomes given his price tag represents significantly less than half the cost of other rumoured targets.
Gomes also comes with a ringing endorsement from United ace and fellow Brazilian Matheus Cunha, according to the Manchester Evening News. Cunha, who made the switch from Wolves to United last summer, was teammates with Gomes at Molineux, reports the Mirror.
The 26-year-old explained in a July 2024 interview why he spots parallels between Gomes and United midfielder Casemiro, who has become his colleague at both club and international level.
United’s No.10 also dropped hints about why Gomes would be a valuable addition to Amorim’s squad, praising the midfielder as ‘humble’. “Maybe Casemiro,” Cunha said last year when asked which players reminds him of Gomes.
“He is a bit older now, but I put Casemiro’s name there only to show where Joao Gomes could arrive. I think Joao has the possibility to arrive. He is very humble, and he works a lot. The good teams come like a gift when you do that.
“He is unbelievable on the pitch,” Cunha added. “I feel very secure. I feel like I can lose the ball when I have my midfielders behind me. He played very well for the national team, too.”
