A man in his twenties has been charged following a horrific knife attack on the southside of the city, which claimed a woman’s life and left a man with serious injuries.

The victims were identified locally on Tuesday as Stella and Brian Gallagher, who had been residing in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, for over two decades.

Gardaí have confirmed today that a man detained at the scene has been charged in relation to the incident and is scheduled to appear before Cork City District Court this afternoon.

An inquiry into the fatal incident continues, with a comprehensive forensic examination of the property already completed.

A Garda spokesperson stated: “Gardaí investigating the fatal incident in Ballinlough on Monday night, 17th November 2025, have charged the male in his 20s who was arrested at the scene. He is due to appear in front of the Cork City District Court this afternoon, Wednesday, 19th November 2025.”, reports Cork Beo.

Officers were summoned to the property on the southside of the city shortly after 9pm on Monday evening, with Armed Support Units dispatched to the location.

Local residents informed CorkBeo this morning that there was ‘terrible screaming’ heard from outside the house in what is typically a very peaceful estate, prompting immediate calls to the emergency services. A family liaison officer has been assigned to provide support to the bereaved family, and a dedicated incident room has been set up at Angelsea Street Garda Station under the supervision of a senior investigating officer.

Local councillor Peter Horgan expressed his sorrow over the tragic event that has left the community in mourning. Speaking to CorkBeo, he said: “It’s an awful tragedy, my prayers are with the victims and the wider family. Gardaí have now begun their investigation and must be given the space to do that, but the incident has cast a dark cloud over the entire parish; it’s a very sad situation.”

Gardaí are urging any witnesses to this incident to step forward. They’re particularly interested in anyone who was in the Shrewsbury Downs area of Ballinlough between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm on Monday, 17th November 2025, and may have camera footage (including home security and dash-cam footage).

Such individuals are requested to share this footage with the investigating Gardaí.
