Several individuals have been evacuated from their residences in Londonderry due to a current security alert.

This security alert follows the safe disposal of two viable pipe bombs last week in the same vicinity. Police Derry City and Strabane broke the news on Thursday morning, November 20, advising the public to steer clear of the area until further notice.

A spokesperson for the PSNI stated: “Police are at the scene of a security alert in the Glenabbey Close area of Derry/Londonderry this morning.”

The spokesperson further noted that police were present “alongside Ammunition Technical Officers”. They added: “Cordons are in place and a number of homes evacuated. Please avoid the area until further notice.”, reports the Mirror.

A public safety operation was launched at Skeoge following a report to police on Thursday, November, 13. The PSNI found two devices in the Glenabbey Close and Beraghvale area of the city.

Nearly two dozen homes were evacuated as a result as cordons were put in place in the immediate and surrounding vicinity.

Ammunition Technical Officers attended and examined the devices, both of which are described as pipe-bombs. They were declared as viable, made safe and removed.
