A footballer’s dad has reportedly been arrested over the alleged theft of a lorry loaded with Nike sportswear.

Diego Osvaldo Arriaga Garcia, 21, plays for Club America, one of Mexico’s ‘big two’ clubs alongside Chivas Guadalajara. The Liga MX side play their home games at the 87,000-capacity Estadio Azteca, the largest stadium in Latin America.

But the player is today said to be facing up to the arrest of his father, Bernabe Arriaga, 56, alongside two other men who were detained shortly after the vehicle was reported stolen, according to media in Mexico.

Authorities tracked the lorry via CCTV and intercepted it. They recovered the merchandise, Nike clothing and shoes, which NeedToKnow said was worth possibly a million Mexican peso or more.

A million Mexican peso equates to around £41,400. The vehicle was recovered between Naucalpan and Tlalnepantla, outside Mexico City.

The suspects are believed to be part of a gang operating in and around Mexico City and Toluca.

They allegedly specialise in stealing lorries carrying high-value goods, with textile and logistics companies among their targets.

Arriaga is said to be the father of Garcia, as reported by NeedToKnow.

The attacking or left central midfielder has scored 11 goals in 62 appearances for the Club America’s U23 squad. He has also made four appearances for the senior team, debuting in January this year.

At the time of writing, neither Garcia, nor his club had commented on the alleged arrests.

The other two suspects have been named as Carlos Jesus Alcazar, 35, and Oscar Uriel Martinez, 27.
