An air ambulance landed at a secondary school this afternoon after a child was injured on a sports pitch. A Year 8 pupil needed emergency treatment following an accident on an all-weather pitch at St Hild’s Church of England School in Hartlepool, County Durham.

The boy was taken by ambulance to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough following the incident just before 1pm on Monday (November 24). He is currently believed to be in a stable condition.

Paul Martin, headteacher at St Hild’s Church of England School, told TeessideLive: “It was a pupil that was injured during lunch time, out on the all-weather pitch, in an accident. We immediately called the emergency services and informed parents.

“The emergency services decided to dispatch the air ambulance. The pupil was taken by standard ambulance to James Cook (Hospital) I believe. The only update I have had is that the pupil is receiving treatment and is stable.

“All other pupils were calm and safe in the building while it was dealt with. It was dealt with safely and calmly by all staff involved. We are keeping in contact with the family for updates.”

A post on the school’s Facebook page stated: “We have been dealing with an accident at St Hild’s Church of England School. Emergency services have been contacted and have responded promptly.

“An air ambulance will land on our all-weather pitch imminently. We thank our staff and emergency service for their prompt response.”

In a further update at around 5pm, a school spokesperson said: “At lunchtime today a pupil was involved in an accident. Emergency services responded quickly and the student is currently in hospital receiving treatment.

“We are sure you will join us in wishing them a very speedy recovery. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has got in touch to share their best wishes and say a huge thank you to the emergency services and St Hild’s staff who dealt so swiftly and calmly with the situation.

“We will continue to update you as and when appropriate.”

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) both attended the scene.

A NEAS spokesperson said: “We were called to an incident at an address on King Oswy Drive, Hartlepool, at 12.52pm on Monday 24 November. We dispatched one ambulance crew to the incident and one patient was taken to hospital for further treatment.”
