Manchester United were beaten 1-0 by 10-man Everton at Old Trafford on Monday night, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scoring the only goal of the game in the first half
Manchester United supporters have been left echoing identical sentiments after the Red Devils suffered a 1-0 defeat to a 10-man Everton. Idrissa Gueye was sent off in bizarre fashion early in the encounter after striking teammate Michael Keane across the face, forcing Everton to battle with a numerical disadvantage for virtually the entire match.
Despite their man advantage, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s magnificent right-footed strike into the top corner clinched victory for the Toffees at Old Trafford, delivering a stunning result on Monday evening. Everton hadn’t triumphed at Old Trafford since 2013 and although Ruben Amorim’s team pressed for a leveller through Bryan Mbeumo and Joshua Zirkzee, Jordan Pickford managed to maintain a clean sheet and secure the memorable triumph.
The goal sparked United into action, having been sluggish until that moment. Zirkzee, heavily tipped to depart the club next year, was handed his opportunity up front with Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha unavailable, but his team-mates were unable to provide him with adequate service.
The instant response from United supporters on social media has been scathing, with fans labelling the defeat as “embarrassing”, whilst others expressed their incredulity at the outcome.
“Man Utd was embarrassing last night. The people involved in that squad should be ashamed of themselves. At home? A performance like that?” questioned one on X.
“Man Utd 0 – 1 Everton. Outperformed before the red card. Outperformed against 10 men. I have no words for what I just witnessed. Embarrassing,” wrote another.
“When you already have a player advantage too. Embarrassing man,” said a third supporter.
By sheer coincidence, it marked exactly one year since Amorim took charge of his first United match, with mounting pressure on the Portuguese boss’ position.
The defeat leaves United languishing in 10th spot after 12 fixtures and means they haven’t secured a Premier League victory since their 4-2 triumph over Brighton at Old Trafford last month.
Amorim faces a challenging trip to Crystal Palace this weekend, followed by clashes with West Ham, Wolves, Bournemouth and Aston Villa before the Christmas period arrives.
