Thirteen people have been injured after a tram came off its rails before another crashed into it. The incident happened in the early hours of this morning (November 26) as the tram was on Bonner Straße in Düsseldorf, Germany. Police say the vehicle, which was travelling on the U72 line in Düsseldorf-Holthausen, had derailed due to a technical issue with the signal box, The Local reports.

A total of 13 people were hurt including the driver. One person is said to be in a serious condition but none of the injuries are thought to be life-threatening. A fire and rescue spokesperson told RP Online: “We had to transport nine people to nearby hospitals by ambulance.”

A spokesperson for Rheinbahn told the media that the recovery operation would be difficult after the first car of the U72 tram derailed and came to a halt on an angle. “The second car wagon then crashed into the first, and the two became wedged together,” the spokesperson said. A crane has been requested to assist with the recovery.

Commuters have been warned the recovery operation could take several days as power lines have also been damaged.
