Liverpool were emphatically beaten 4-1 by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday evening in a humiliating display which has left them on the brink of elimination
Liverpool’s dismal season hit a new low as they were trounced 4-1 at home by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
After Virgil van Dijk conceded a penalty to Ivan Perisic, Dominik Szoboszlai managed to equalise, only for a woeful second-half performance from the Reds to allow Guus Til and substitute Couhaib Driouech to score easy goals twice.
The outcome means Arne Slot’s team still have their work cut out to progress to the knockout stages with three matches left in the initial stage, two of which are away games.
Daily Star Sport assess the performance of the Liverpool players.
Giorgi Mamardashvili, 5 – Had no chance with the PSV penalty and was barely involved in the first half. Could possibly have been quicker out for the second goal but the third and fourth weren’t his fault, reports the Liverpool Echo.
Curtis Jones, 4 – Provided drive down the wing from right-back before the break and was quick to press and challenge PSV players. The second half proved more challenging, however.
Ibrahima Konate, 3 – Made a couple of improvised challenges in the first half with PSV largely on the defensive until a dreadful mistake allowed the visitors to score their third goal.
Virgil van Dijk, 3 – A thoughtless handball to concede a penalty set the tone for the evening followed by an unnecessary booking, but he was unlucky to hit the bar with a header in the first half.
Milos Kerkez, 5 – One Liverpool player who showed fight during the dire opening and maintained his appetite throughout, coming close with one effort.
Ryan Gravenberch, 4 – Had periods of good possession but needed more composure at times before the break and seemed to vanish after it.
Alexis Mac Allister, 4 – Attempted to get involved in the action but not everything went as planned, and he didn’t do himself any favours after the break.
Mohamed Salah, 4 – Faced a lot of pressure from long balls but continued to show up, albeit with diminishing returns in the second half.
Dominik Szoboszlai, 7 – Much more effective in midfield, impressive both on and off the ball and was in the right place at the right time to score the equaliser. Came close with one effort in the second half.
Cody Gakpo, 4 – Worked hard against his former team and his shot led to the equaliser, but missed a big opportunity in the second half.
Hugo Ekitike, 6 – Gradually got into the game, started to link well with team-mates and tested Kovar before the break. However, his injury is a concern.

Alexander Isak (for Ekitike 61), 4 – Touched the ball more than he did on Saturday and managed to get a shot saved.
Federico Chiesa (for Konate 76), 5 – Showed a willingness to try to score but had some clear moments of frustration.
