The Daily Star’s world-famous ‘Lettuce’ Liz Truss is being used as inspiration by the Green Party who described it as a ‘perfect metaphor’ for the chaos of the ex-PM’s reign
The Daily Star’s world-famous Liz Truss Lettuce is being used as inspiration by the Green Party – whose leader has hailed it as a political legend.
Firebrand Greens boss Zack Polanski is using our veg in his new campaign to raise funds for the local and mayoral elections in May.
And he told us after launching a skit featuring the Lettuce Liz: “The Daily Star’s lettuce has become a permanent fixture in Britain’s political folklore – a perfect metaphor for the chaos of the Liz Truss era. It’s funny, but it’s also a reminder of how unserious our politics became.
“Now our focus is firmly on next May, where a very different kind of Greens will be making headlines. Not wilted, not short-lived, but deeply rooted, growing, organised, and ready to deliver the change this country desperately needs.”
Zack features the lettuce in a newly released online sketch that casts him as a theatre director producing a politically-themed version of Charles Dickens’ festive classic A Christmas Carol. It sees him being followed by flunkies as he discusses who should be cast for the iconic ghosts of Christmas past, present and future in the play.
A flunky shows Zack a series of cards bearing the faces of some of Britain’s most hated political leaders – and says they are perfect reminders to audiences of past horrors. One card bears the face of Boris Johnson, and while discussing a candidate to play the Ghost of Christmas Past, Zack’s ‘theatre assistant’ suggests flop Prime Minister Liz Truss should play the ghoul.
He then pretends to have no idea who she is – until he is shown a “more recent picture” of her, as a lettuce. It prompts him to exclaim: “Oh yeah!”
Truss is infamous for tanking the UK’s finances with her disastrous 2022 mini-budget – and failed to make her grip on power in Downing Street last longer than it took for the Daily Star’s ‘Lettuce Liz’ to go off. Our video of our decomposing veg rotting as she clung on to her job went viral when it outlasted the PM.
Despite being such a rotten PM she was outlasted by our Lettuce Liz, Truss has refused to take responsibility for being one of Britain’s biggest clowns in power. She recently blamed a corporate “Blob” for laying waste to Britain’s economy.
Truss added a gaggle of corporate big-wigs were actually the ones who thwarted her ambitions for a low-tax, high-growth economy. She they were not only made up of officials at the Bank of England, Treasury and the Office for Budget Responsibility. The failed PM also blamed opinion-formers for her disastrous run in Downing Street.
She said: “I think the Blob describes something wider than just the government. It’s a groupthink shared by senior media executives, senior corporate executives and civil servants: ‘Wouldn’t it be better if experts and technocrats were running everything?’… that’s a whole shared belief system. Big spending, big government, big taxes, big immigration.”
Truss’ mini-budget in September 2022 was so catastrophic it spooked financial markets and pushed up the cost of government borrowing as it introduced huge tax cuts off the back of plans to spend up to £150billion subsidising consumer energy bills in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Experts now say the Greens could be poised to replace Labour as Britain’s leftie party of choice. And some predict it could end up taking on Labour’s current rivals Reform as voters are becoming disillusioned with the party after Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ brutal Budget and its struggle to sort out hot-button issues such as illegal immigration.
