Newport retail park hearth as clients evacuated in as hearth spreads to Home Bargains

A major blaze broke out at popular busy retail park in Wales as customers had to be evacuated from stores.

The incident at the Leisure Park at Spytty Road in Newport last night (December 2) had Christmas shoppers watch on in horror as the blaze spread.

The fire happened close to Home Bargains on the retail park and quickly spread to the roof.

The incident caused chaos with the neighbouring Cineworld being evacuated along with McDonald’s, JD Gym, Starbucks, Burger King and other businesses in the area, reports WalesOnline.

Power was also shut off as the fire service tackled a blaze at Home Bargains, leaving crowds gathering in the car park.

Home Bargains was still open when the blaze began as shoppers were alerted by a fire alarm.

Locals Hayley Whiteman and Gillian Phillips told Wales Online they were both shopping at Home Bargains when the shop was evacuated as the fire spread up the side of the building.

The couple were also left stuck in the car park until the blaze could be put out.

A Burger King worker who did not want to be named told Wales Online: “There was a total blackout.

“Every business was evacuated. We have reopened but all of the others will be closed for the rest of the night. The fire spread so quickly, by the time the fire service arrived it at reached up to the roof.”

Cineworld was forced to close for the rest of the evening with customers asked to contact customer services for a refund.

A Cineworld spokesperson said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to close the cinema tonight. Any booked tickets for this evening please contact customer services for a refund. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The blaze was eventually put out by fire crews and some businesses were able to reopen last night.
