A young boxer was stabbed to death with a machete while defending his sister in a horrific incident at his family’s home.
Josue David Hernandez was at home with his four sisters when tragedy struck. One sibling was assaulted and Hernandez stepped in to defend her.
A man then stabbed Josue with the machete during the confrontation. The 20-year-old died at the scene as the killer fled the house in San Luis Potosí, located north of Mexico City, Mexico.
Emergency services arrived at the scene on Tuesday, December 2, but could only confirm the boxer’s death. The suspect still remains at large.
Hernandez was considered a rising star in Mexican boxing. Despite his young age, he had already excelled in his early amateur bouts after starting the sport at the age of 15.
He took part in state tournaments where he won several amateur championships, as reported by NeedToKnow. Hernandez also participated in exhibition fights and served as a sparring partner for top pros.
He was preparing for his long-awaited professional debut, scheduled for early next year, before his alleged murder.
His trainer, former super flyweight world title challenger Titan Rodriguez, said: “Today, I woke up to the devastating and heartbreaking news that you are no longer here.
“My friend, my brother, my running partner. So many dreams to fulfil. So many conversations and all the trust we had in each other to achieve everything. A part of my heart goes with you.
“God only knows why these things happen, your passing hurts me deeply, and I’m going to work incredibly hard to achieve all the goals we had together.
“I love you very much, Josue David Hernandez, may God receive you in his holy kingdom. It’s time to shine in heaven, my king.”
The investigation into Hernandez’s death is ongoing.
