A group of military personnel have interrupted Benin’s state TV, announcing the collapse of the government in an apparent coup in the West Africa nation.
The soldiers announced Sunday (December 7) the overthrow of President Patrice Talon, who has been in power in Benin since 2016. It comes after Benin’s ruling coalition nominated Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni to be its candidate.
This move saw the politicians positioning a man who is viewed by many as an architect of its economic policies to pursue the administration’s current reform agenda if elected.
