The victim, a Liverpool fan identified so far only by his first name of Harry, was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident in Tenerife on December 1
Police are investigating the tragic death of a Britishman who was fatally struck in an alleged “deliberate” hit-and-run while cycling in Tenerife. The victim, known only by his first name Harry and identified as a Liverpool supporter, was declared dead at the scene following the incident on Monday evening (December 1)
The emergency services were alerted around 8pm in the municipality of Arona in the south of the popular holiday island. The young man was cycling on the TF-652 road between Las Chafiras and the fishing village of Las Galletas.
Local reports today have labelled the incident as a “hit-and-run”, with island newspaper El Dia stating that the Civil Guard are probing whether the ‘British’ man was “murdered”.
The paper reported: “After initial inquiries officers reached the early conclusion that he wasn’t run over by accident.”
Local police from Arona Town Hall initially handled the inquiries but have since passed the case onto Civil Guard investigators who were unavailable for comment early this morning. No arrests have reportedly been made so far.
A makeshift memorial adorned with flowers, candles and a photograph of the deceased, whose age and full name have not yet been disclosed, has been set up near the location where he died. It is believed that he resided in Tenerife, although officials have yet to confirm this.
A Liverpool shirt has been attached to the trunk of a palm tree near the spot where a photo of the man and floral tributes have been placed. One heartfelt message penned in English read: “I love you forever wee bro.”
A regional emergency response coordination centre confirmed following the cyclist’s fatality on Monday: “We received the first calls just before 8.15pm on December 1, saying a man had been knocked off his bike by a car at kilometre six of the TF-652 road in the municipality of Arona.
“Two ambulances were mobilised along with local police and the Civil Guard. They could only certify the death of the person hit when they reached the scene because of the injuries he had sustained.”
One local newspaper article published soon after the tragedy described the victim as a 25-year-old, although there has not yet been any official confirmation of his age and until today his nationality had not been reported on.
