International soccer star dies after collapsing with ‘enormous mind haemorrhage’

Belgian football legend Glen De Boeck has died at the age of 54.

De Boeck, who was capped 36 times by Belgium during his distinguished career, suffered a massive brain haemorrhage that left him in a coma for three days.

The Anderlecht icon collapsed at home on Friday before being rushed to Antwerp University Hospital. Tragically, the damage was too severe for him to recover.

His family confirmed the former defender passed away last night surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by two daughters, Bo and Caro.

De Boeck started his career with hometown club FC Boom before signing for Mechelen. Belgian giants Anderlecht snapped up the defender in 1995, where he captained the side and played for 10 years until his retirement in 2005 due to a heavy knee injury.

After hanging up his boots, De Boeck became assistant manager at Anderlecht before embarking on his own managerial career.

His first job was at Cercle Brugge, where he remained for three years before taking charge of Germinal Beerschot. De Boeck later managed in the Netherlands with VVV-Venlo before returning to Belgium.

His final managerial job was with Belgian Pro League club Kortrijk in 2023. He then became a prominent pundit of Belgian television.

The De Boeck family have endured a devastating year of personal loss. Glen lost his father Louis, 80, to a long illness.

During his funeral, De Boeck’s mother Louisette collapsed from a brain haemorrhage. Doctors discovered she was also suffering from pancreatic cancer, and she tragically died a month after her husband.
