The woman who perished in a house fire that also took the life of a four-year-old boy following a “reckless, callous and murderous attack on a family home” has been identified locally.

Mary Holt, in her 60s, was employed locally at a nursing home, and has been described as a “beautiful angel” by a family member. Gardai have launched a full murder investigation into the deaths of innocent care worker Mary Holt, 60, and the four-year-old boy, who has been named as Tadhg Farrell in Edenderry, Co Offaly. It’s understood that she was young Tadhg’s grandaunt.

One avenue of investigation is that those responsible are involved in the drugs trade and targeted the innocent victims, who had no connection to criminal activity, because of their family ties.

Ms Holt was employed at the nearby Ofalia House nursing home, reports Belfast Live.

A second woman, in her 50s, who was also in the house at the time of the arson attack, remains in hospital receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Paying tribute, a family member wrote: “No words can say how I feel at this moment. You’re the most kind, caring person I know, You do anything for anyone. I love you Aunty Mary. I’ll miss you forever. You’ll be in my prayers.

“Hope God gives you the best bed up there, your with nanny and sister Caroline, RIP. Aunty Mary, I’ll miss you and our chats and you telling me to cop on. I’ll miss you giving out to me. You’re the best Mary, you rest in peace and fly high beautiful angel.”

Tributes have been pouring in on social media for the victims, with one user lamenting: “Poor Mary and poor baby. Shouldn’t have happened. Am heartbroken.”

Mary and the young lad were innocent family members of a convicted drug dealer.

Gardaí are investigating the incident, stating that the house was targeted by an individual or individuals currently unknown, and that the fire was intentionally set in what they’ve labelled as a “reckless, callous and murderous attack on a family home.”

The fire erupted just before 7.45pm on Saturday, December 6, at a residence in Castleview Park where Mary Holt, the young boy, and other family members resided.

By the time the fire brigade arrived, the two-storey property was largely engulfed in flames. Both victims were declared dead at the scene.

The property was cordoned off as a crime scene on Sunday and is currently undergoing a technical examination by the Garda Technical Bureau.

Insiders suggest that one line of investigation is that those responsible are involved in the Midlands drug trade, and the attack is suspected to be a revenge act linked to the imprisoned drug dealer.

Investigators reportedly believe that the victims, who had no involvement in criminal activities, were targeted due to their familial connections.

Sources also reveal that the house had been subjected to previous attacks over the years, including smashed windows and a pipe bomb intended for the property but mistakenly placed elsewhere within the estate.

“These were innocent people who had no connection to the convicted drug dealer’s crimes,” an insider revealed.

An Garda Síochána has initiated a comprehensive murder investigation, confirming that the fire was intentionally set and labelling it as “a reckless, callous and murderous attack on a family home.”

The bodies of the two victims were taken from the scene on Sunday afternoon, with post-mortems scheduled to be carried out at Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore by Assistant State Pathologist Margot Bolster.

A Senior Investigating Officer is spearheading the inquiry from an incident room at Tullamore Garda Station, and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to provide support to the grieving relatives.

Local councillor Fergus McDonnell expressed the community’s shock and deep sorrow over the tragedy that has rocked the residents of Castleview estate.

In a conversation with the Irish Mirror on Sunday morning, Cllr McDonnell shared the local community’s state of disbelief.

“It’s dreadful and horrendous that two lives, a woman and a young boy, have been lost in the house fire,” Cllr McDonnell lamented.

“Everyone is in shock and it is beyond belief,” he added, extending his thoughts to the family of the deceased and the injured woman.

Carol Nolan, Independent TD for the Offaly constituency, also voiced her sadness over the loss of two lives in the fatal house fire.

“Very sad news relating to the house fire in Edenderry. My thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and community. This is just heartbreaking and devastating news,” Deputy Nolan posted on social media.

Cllr Claire Murray also expressed her shock and sorrow, stating that the “entire community is in shock.”

In a heartfelt social media post, Cllr Murray wrote: “I wish to extend my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and neighbours of the woman and child who tragically lost their lives in last night’s house fire. The entire community is in complete shock.

“I also want to acknowledge the work of the emergency services who attended the scene.

“My thoughts are with all those affected,” she added.

Gardaí have issued an urgent appeal for witnesses, particularly anyone who was in the vicinity of Castleview Park or its surrounding roads between 7pm and 8pm on Saturday.

Motorists with dashcam footage from this period are also being urged to come forward.
