Liverpool left livid after VAR controversially disallow purpose in ‘harsh’ choice

Ibrahima Konate saw an opening goal controversially disallowed against Inter Milan.

The French defender thought he had headed the Reds in front from a corner after 34 minutes. However, the goal was ruled out for a handball in the build-up following a mammoth VAR check.

Virgil van Dijk and Hugo Ekitike jumped to make the first contact from the corner, but the captain headed the ball onto the arm of Ekitike, deflecting the ball to Konate.

The decision to disallow the goal was branded ‘harsh’ by former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer following a VAR review that took several minutes and saw referee Felix Zwayer watch multiple replays of the incident before changing his original call.

Shearer later doubled down on his verdict later in the first half saying: “That for me is not a deliberate handball. Liverpool should be leading this game.”

Fans took to social media to slam the decision, with one user fuming: “There was no deliberate handball, and the referee had no basis for disallowing that goal.”

A second said: “Im not a Liverpool fan but for that goal to be ruled out for handball is absolutely scandalous.”

While former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand posted: “V harsh decision. Was a big + much needed moment for Konate! Ps why don’t the refs go to the monitor sooner to speed up play?”

A drab first-half at San Siro looked to have its opening goal to spark the game into life.

But the disallowed goal did reignite the Inter fans, who rallied behind their team as they looked to break the deadlock before half-time, seeing Lautaro Martinez force Alisson into a smart save in the opening 45’s best chance.
