Liverpool secured victory at Inter thanks to a late VAR gift, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches in Italy on Tuesday evening.

A hugely controversial penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai just two minutes before the end of regular time clinched a 1-0 win in Milan.

This result puts Arne Slot’s team in a strong position with 12 points from their first six Champions League group stage matches, and they are now well placed to progress to the knockout stages.

Here, the Daily Star Sport assess the performance of the Liverpool players.

Alisson Becker 7

He watched a Barella free-kick go wide and handled shots from distance with ease before making a solid stop to deny Martinez,

Joe Gomez 6

He was reliable enough defensively, although his attacking ventures were understandably somewhat limited and occasionally lacked quality. He was substituted.

Ibrahima Konate 7

He didn’t seem affected by his error at Leeds and was unlucky to have a goal disallowed. His dominant display after half-time will boost his confidence.

Virgil van Dijk 7

He read the game well to neutralise Inter’s early threats in the first half but lost Martinez for a header before half-time. He made a good block from the same player in the second half.

Andy Robertson 7

He started off well in attack but was slightly subdued after being hit hard by Martinez until he found his rhythm again after half-time.

Ryan Gravenberch 8

He moved well with the ball and was alert defensively as the deepest midfielder, making two good interceptions in the first half. He maintained his performance level throughout the match.

Dominik Szoboszlai 8

Plenty of energy playing on the right of the midfield diamond and helped out Gomez. Excellent tracking back and pressing and kept his cool for late penalty.

Alexis Mac Allister 6

Performed adequately as the most advanced midfielder, especially as Liverpool pressed hard in the opening quarter. Effectively shielded the ball when necessary.

Curtis Jones 7

Forced a save from Sommer after one strong run and showed confidence with the ball. Seemed to thrive in the formation. Booked.

Alexander Isak 5

Had an inconsistent presence before the break but made a better contribution afterwards and was unlucky not to win some fouls. Could have done more with a second-half opportunity after winning possession. Subbed.

Hugo Ekitike 6

Mostly on the sidelines until drawing a save from Sommer and inadvertently handling for disallowed opener. Booked.

Florian Wirtz (for Isak 68) 7

Immediately made a difference with his range of passing and intelligence on the ball. Won the penalty with a tumble in the box.

Conor Bradley (for Gomez 68) 7

Added attacking thrust down the right but should have scored with Sommer instead saving from close range.
