Melvin Odoom has revealed the most outlandish purchase he has ever made that he hoped would make him ‘cool’ – but instead made him look ‘seedy’.
The BBC Radio 1 presenter appeared on the Spent podcast, in association with Nationwide, where he chatted to fellow Radio 1 star and podcast host Matt Edmonson about his spending habits.
Among them were the things on which he has splashed the cash over the years – including a hot tub when he was living as a bachelor.
Describing the pricey purchase as the biggest ‘waste of money’ he has ever spent, Melvin revealed how it came with hidden costs which bumped up the price even more.
‘I ordered the hot tub, and then after I paid for it, they were like, so Melvin, you’re gonna have to get this craned into your house… I’ve had to pay for this crane, which nearly smashed the roof of my house,’ he said.

He revealed he had hoped the purchase would make him appear ‘cool’ but joked that in reality, it had the opposite effect.
’No one thought it was cool. When you’re single – I was single for so long – I remember going to people: “I’ve got a hot tub at home”.
‘There’s nothing more seedy than telling a person you’ve just met you’ve got a hot tub.’
Melvin added it had been a deeply impractical purchase, as he felt it was extremely laborious to actually use the contraption.
He joked: ‘Every time I wanted to use it was like a science exam – it has to be on all the time. When the cost of living started going up – I just switched it off. I emptied it and walked away.
‘It was the biggest waste of money.’
Elsewhere in the podcast, Melvin discussed the unusual jobs he took in the earlier days of his career.
One of the quirkiest roles he held was as a dolphin on the CBBC Saturday morning programme, Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow.
The zany show was known for its outrageous stunts, many of which were carried out by equally zany presenters, Richard ‘Dick’ McCourt and Dominic ‘Dom’ Wood.
‘I’d never heard of the show before, so I walked in and I didn’t know what to expect,’ Melvin recalled.
‘My friend was like, put on this animal outfit… bear in mind, I wanted to do, like, cool stuff, like MTV and stuff like that.
‘They were like, when we give you a cue, just run out on set and dance…’
Despite his confusion at being thrust into such an unusual environment, and the fact it wasn’t necessarily a role he was keen to grab with both hands, Melvin still threw himself into it – thinking of the work ethic that had been instilled in him by a loved one.

‘My gran, who is the most amazing person, once told me – whatever you do, be it big or small, do it to the best of your ability.
‘With my gran in my head, I was like – this is silly – but let me just go out there and kill it. So, I went out there – I was doing the running man, the robot, crazy movements.’
Melvin’s appearance on the podcast follows A Place in the Sun presenter Scarlette Douglas’s chat with Matt Edmonson in which she revealed the cruel gift she was given by an ex partner.
The star, 38, revealed she has always ‘had a weight issue’ from being ‘weighed all the time’ as a professional dancer when she was younger.
Before finding fame as a presenter, Scarlette was a backing dancer for a number of stars including CeeLo Green, Paloma Faith, and Ant & Dec.
Scarlette admitted she ‘lost it’ on her ex-boyfriend after he said he had a special surprise for her and gave her a Weight Watchers scale for her birthday.
She said: ‘I can remember what he gave me for my 30th birthday. We were all going to Barcelona for an Arsenal Barcelona game.
‘I was like, “Come on, you’ve got to come. You’ve got to come”, he’s like, “I can’t, can’t afford it because I’m buying you your birthday presents”.
So I was like, “Okay, gonna be pretty good. What’s this gonna be.”‘
She continued: ‘We’re about to go out for dinner, the birthday dinner with my other brother and everyone. He’s like, “No, I want to give you a present. I’m really excited to give it to you”.
‘I opened it and he had bought me a Weight Watchers scale.
‘I have a weight issue. From being a professional dancer and from college, we used to get weighed all the time, so I always have an issue about my weight. I always feel like I’m overweight and have body dysmorphia.
‘I said, “Get that out of my house. Get it out of my face. You’re telling me you didn’t come to Barcelona because you bought me a Weight Watchers scale”. I lost it.’
