Prince of Wales bridge closed over ‘danger of collapse’ as M4 hit with 2-hour delays

Motorists on the M4 are facing major delays due to fierce winds causing a major bridge to close.

The lane closures on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge are for safety reasons following an inspection.

National Highways confirmed that emergency repairs are needed to a number of lamp columns.

However, wind gusts are currently around 50mph are not expected to slow down until 3pm, meaning work on the bridge cannot be conducted at this time.

A National Highways spokesman said: “There are severe delays approaching the M4 Prince Of Wales Bridge in both directions due to emergency roadworks.

“2 lanes of 3 have had to be closed in both directions for safety reasons awaiting emergency repairs to a number of lamp columns.

“This is due to urgent safety inspections of lighting columns on the bridge, which have identified an immediate risk.

“Testing found several columns in need of immediate removal due to risk of collapse.

“However, we have to wait for high winds to subside before work can take place.

“We appreciate your patience while we complete this vital safety work.”
