Birmingham New Street station chaos as emergency incident halts all trains

Commuters are facing severe delays this morning as trains have been stopped into Birmingham New Street Station. Emergency services were called to an incident this morning. Services between Wolverhampton and New Street will be impacted until 11am, according to National Rail.

The disruption is expected to affect passengers travelling on Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, London Northwestern Railway, Transport for Wales, West Midlands Railway, reports the Mirror.

As a result, trains running between these stations may be cancelled, revised or delayed by up to 60 minutes. Some services may also be diverted.

Disruption is affecting the following routes:

  • Avanti West Coast between Glasgow Central / Edinburgh / Crewe and Birmingham New Street, and between Glasgow Central / Edinburgh / Lancaster / Manchester Piccadilly / Wolverhampton and London Euston
  • CrossCountry between Manchester Piccadilly and Birmingham New Street, and between Southampton Central / Bristol Temple Meads and Manchester Piccadilly, and between Paignton / Bournemouth and Birmingham New Street
  • London Northwestern Railway between Liverpool Lime Street / Crewe and Birmingham New Street
  • Trasport for Wales between Holyhead / Aberystwyth / Machynlleth Chester / Crewe and Birmingham New Street
  • West Midlands Railway between Shrewsbury and Birmingham New Street, and between Rugeley Trent / Walsall and Wolverhampton

Avanti customers are being advised that if your train is cancelled, your ticket is valid on one of the two Avanti West Coast services immediately before your booked train, or one of the two immediately after.

Services may be diverted via Bescot Stadium. These services will not call at Sandwell & Dudley.

Passengers on cancelled CrossCountry services can use their tickets on the following at no extra cost:

  • West Midlands Metro services between Grand Central (close to Birmingham New Street) and Wolverhampton and on West Midlands Railway services between Wolverhampton and Stafford.

If your CrossCountry train is cancelled, then you can use your ticket on the two CrossCountry services operating before and the two CrossCountry services after your cancelled service.
