A new report has revealed the scale of the nation’s limit breaking, as well as the volume of motorists snared travelling at extreme speeds. 

While anyone caught speeding at over 100mph will likely receive an instant ban and a huge fine to boot, there are thousands of motorists who have been identified by police travelling well beyond this extortionate speed in the last 12 months.

A freedom of information request to all 45 UK police forces – of which 32 responded – revealed that between September 2024 and August 2025, more than three million drivers received speeding endorsements.

These are drivers who were either pulled over by cops or caught by speed cameras.

And more than 1,500 of them were commandeered for speeding over 112mph.

That equates to approximately one motorist every six hours in the UK being caught by police at eye-watering speeds.

But what’s the significance of 112mph?

In total, 3,082,339 motorists were caught exceeding speed limits across the 32 force areas that responded to the investigation.

And 1,570 of these were clocked at 112mph or higher, which is representative of just 0.05 per cent of all speeding offences. 

However, with not all UK police forces responding to the FOI request, the true number of speeders will be much higher. 

Why 112mph? 

There’s a very good reason to use 112mph as a benchmark for the most extreme speeding cases.

This is because the first car manufacturer to implement speed limiters across its entire vehicle range will not allow any of its models produced from 2020 to go beyond this threshold.

This was part of its ‘Vision Zero’ strategy – an ambitious safety target to ensure no one would be killed or seriously injured in one of its cars from 2020 onwards.

Swedish brand Volvo, which is synonymous with safety in the automotive world, says that had all motors been equipped with its electronic speed limiter technology, it would have prevented the highest speeds recorded across the 30 police force areas.

The fastest of all in the 12-month period was a motorists clocked at a terrifying 160mph in Cheshire.

That’s almost 2.3 times the national speed limit. 

Another driver was caught speeding at 159mph in Northamptonshire, the police data revealed.

Drivers caught over 100mph will likely have to make an appearance in court and face an immediate ban of between seven and 57 days, depending on the severity of their speeding.

It will also trigger a fine of up to 175 per cent of the offender’s weekly income (around £720 based on the average UK salary), though this is capped at £1,000 on a ‘standard’ road or £2,500 if you are caught on a motorway.

Extreme speeding convictions are also punishable by up to six points on the driver’s licence once they get it back. 

Nicole Melillo Shaw, managing director of Volvo Car UK, said safety is its ‘number one priority’ and suggested its vehicle-wide speed limiters should be rolled out by all manufacturers. 

‘With a record number of licensed vehicles on the road in the UK – more than 42 million in 2025 – road safety has never been more important,’ she said. 

‘The fact a UK driver is caught travelling in excess of 112mph every six hours, highlights the importance and relevance of our speed limiter technology. 

‘It is a feature we build in by design, and the findings of our research suggest it is the right approach to take.’

The electronically-implemented limiter means Volvo owners driving on unrestricted sections of the Autobahn can still travel at higher speeds than the national limit when suitable. 

The only Volvo cars not fitted with 112mph speed limiters are those supplied to police fleets.

The data collated showed that Northamptonshire had the highest number of drivers (291) who exceeded 112mph during the past 12 months. This is perhaps because both the M1 and M45 motorways pass through the county.

Staffordshire (196) and Merseyside (117) also recorded a high volume of extreme speeders travelling in excess of 112mph. 

At the opposite end of the speeding spectrum, Dyfed-Powys and Cleveland police data showed zero drivers topping 112mph.
