The Met Office has issued three fresh weather warnings for torrential downpours as 15 regions nationwide prepare for potential flooding and electricity blackouts. The alerts cover sections of Northern England and Scotland from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday, plus areas of Wales from midnight on Sunday lasting throughout the entire day.

The national meteorological service warns that residential properties and commercial premises face the threat of flooding, whilst bus and rail networks could face severe disruption, and motorists may encounter extended journey times due to surface water and flooding on roadways.

Electricity supply interruptions are also anticipated. The warnings affect the following areas: For Wales, the Met Office states that “periods of heavy rain during Sunday may lead to travel disruption and some flooding.”

Across England and Scotland, the weekend’s intense rainfall could similarly result in “travel disruption and some flooding”.

The warning states: “Outbreaks of rain will spread in from the west during Saturday, eventually clearing away during Sunday afternoon and evening.

“The rain will be heavy at times with accumulations of 30-50 mm developing quite widely and in excess of 100 mm across some high ground.”

There is also a yellow weather warning in place for five areas in Wales throughout Sunday, which could see 30-40mm of rain fall widely and up to 100mm falling on higher ground.

In addition, a yellow rain warning is in place for five regions in Scotland between 12pm on Saturday and 6pm on Sunday, with the Met Office warning that 30-40mm of rain is expected to fall widely.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Rebekah Hicks said: “While there is still some uncertainty around the timing of individual pulses of heavy rain, the combination of prolonged rainfall and already saturated ground means there is a chance of further disruption to travel and localised flooding.
