Grass verge exterior residence in ‘extremely coveted’ neighbourhood goes up for public sale…for £9,500

A grass verge beside a semi-detached home in a neighbourhood described as ‘highly coveted’ is set to go up for auction for £9,500.

The baffling strip of land, a 225m² patch of grass, runs directly outside a privately owned home in one of Poole’s most desirable postcodes on Bullfinch Close in Dorset.

The sliver is being sold by Auction House and advertised on Rightmove, but estate agents offer no hint as to what the oddly shaped plot could realistically be used for.

Instead, the listing warns: ‘Purchasers are deemed to rely on their own enquiries with regard to any possible development potential for this individual plot in respect of planning and any other consents or rights over the land.’

The guide price for the land sits between £8,000 and £9,500.

The verge sits in a neighbourhood where the average property sells for around £358,000, and is described in the advert as lying in a ‘safe, affluent and secure’ area.

Bidding will open via online auction at 1pm on January 19, closing 24 hours later.

The auctioneer adds: ‘Current Vacant plot situated in the highly coveted location of Poole. In one of Dorset’s most sought-after neighbourhoods.’

The unusual sale adds to a list of very small slices of UK land which hit the market with an eye-watering price tag.

On Porth Mawr in Abersoch, Wales, a minuscule patch of sand squeezed between beach huts was up for grabs at £100,000 – the cost of a flat or even a small house in some parts of the country.

The site previously held a wooden hut, destroyed in storms, but the owner has since secured planning permission from Cyngor Gwynedd for a replacement, despite Llanengan Community Council branding the proposal an ‘overdevelopment’.

The listing, with Elvins Estate Agents, boasts ‘beautiful panoramic views across the bay towards St Tudwals Islands and Machroes Beach’.

They said: ‘An exciting opportunity to acquire a beach hut plot on Abersoch main beach with planning permission to build a new hut.

‘Benefit from owning your own part of Abersoch beach with the convenience of storage and shelter at the waters edge.

‘We believe the property to be Freehold, but potential purchasers should seek clarification from their solicitor prior to an exchange of contracts.’
