Students at Brown University are being urged to ‘run, hide and fight’ amid reports an active shooter left ‘multiple casualties’ on the campus.
The Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island has been shutdown following reports of a shooting on Saturday evening.
The terrifying incident unfolded near the Barus and Holley Engineering building, according to an alert sent out by the university at 4:22pm local time.
Much about the shooting remains unclear, with authorities so far having released no information on the nature of the attack or the number of victims.
Students were told to silence their phones and stayed turned for further safety information.
The Sun Chronicle reported that SWAT police were hunting a suspect and that there were ‘multiple’ victims.
In an update from the university at 5:11pm, officials said that a suspect was not in custody and police are continuing to search for the shooter. Officials previously reported that a suspect was in custody earlier in the evening.
Emergency vehicles, including police cars and ambulances have since swarmed the campus in response.
