Inter Milan’s Serie A game against Genoa was marred by violent clashes between the two sets of fans as vehicles were set on fire before kick-off
Inter Milan and Genoa fans clashed in shocking scenes before their Serie A match on Sunday.
The game at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium was marred by violence before kick-off from both sets of supporters. Riot police were forced to intervene to quell the trouble as vehicles were set on fire.
Videos have been posted to social media showing police riot vans and flames coming from vehicles as the authorities attempted to calm down the unsavoury situation. Firecrackers and smoke bombs were also thrown in the street.
It’s reported that the violence was sparked when some Genoa fans threw objects at Inter fans positioned in a designated area.
According to Sky Sports Italy, this sparked the first clash between the two groups as police attempted to get the situation under control.
However, they add that further clashes broke out between the police and Rossoblu ultras, seeing bins set on fire before vehicles were targeted as authorities used tear gas against supporters in a bid to disperse fans.
Two people are reported to have been injured as a result of the trouble.
Police confirmed that order was restored before kick-off of the game that Inter won 2-1 to climb to the top of the table.
Despite the clashes, Inter and Genoa aren’t rivals, with The Grifone, who are managed by former Italy and Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi, fierce rivals with Sampdoria. Though the two clubs have not met in the league since 2022 due to Sampdoria’s relegation to Serie B.
Defender Yann Bisseck opened the scoring just six minutes in before Lautaro Martinez doubled up for the visitors in the 38th minute. Vitinha halved the deficit in the 68th minute, but Genoa were unable to find a late equaliser.
