German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said his country would retaliate against Russian aggression and attacks.
Speaking on ZDF television, the politician described the recent diplomatic efforts in Berlin aimed at ending the war in Ukraine as a major success. The Chancellor said the talks had “brought significant progress” particularly regarding the willingness of the US to join Europe in providing security guarantees for Ukraine after a ceasefire.
During an appearance on the programme “What now, Mr. Merz?”, the German leader said: “We even talked about Article 5-like security guarantee.” NATO’s Article 5 is the cornerstone of the alliance, stating that an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all, obligating other members to take action, including armed force if necessary, to restore security.
