M&S Charlton retailer evacuated with ’30 individuals handled’ as police swarm

A ‘major incident’ has reportedly been declared at a Marks and Spencer branch in Charlton as 30 people have needed treatment with 11 taken to hospital.

Emergency services are understood to be at the store on Gallions Road this morning (December 16) as they deal with a suspected carbon monoxide leak.

A Met Police spokesperson said the London Ambulance Service (LAS) is leading on the incident

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson has told MyLondon: “Firefighters are currently at the scene of a suspected carbon monoxide incident at a shop on Gallions Road in Charlton.

“Crews are working alongside multi-agency partners to resolve the incident safely.

“The Brigade was called at 8.35am and two fire engines and two fire rescue units are at the scene.”

James Johnson, Strategic Commander for the London Ambulance Service, said: “We were called at 9.32am today (December 16) to reports of an incident on Gallions Road, Charlton.

“We have sent a number of resources to the scene, including both conventional ambulance resources, specialist assets such as our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and Advanced Paramedic Practitioners.”

He added: “We treated 30 people for chemical inhalation. We took 11 patients to hospital and discharged 19 patients at the scene.”

Greenwich councillor David Gardner, who represents the Greenwich Peninsula ward, initially posted on social media saying 35 people have needed treatment.

He said “There is a major incident this morning at M&S Charlton with 35 people being treated for Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

“All three emergency services are in attendance, so best avoid the area until all clear.”
