Angry shoppers have threatened to boycott a Morrisons’ store after Scrooge-like staff took down its Christmas decorations.

The festive decorations around the checkout area at the Atlas Mills store in Bolton, Gtr Manchester, were removed at the weekend.

Locals claim they were removed after the store received complaints that the decorations were ‘offensive’, but this has not been confirmed by Morrisons.

The removal sparked a backlash on social media with some shoppers threatening to boycott the store.

Morrisons later reinstated the decorations blaming their removal on a ‘miscommunication’. However the incident left some people angry.

One person wrote on social media: “Why do people think Christmas decorations will upset anyone?”

Another added: “I thought Morrisons was a British store”.

One comment read: “Whatever the miscommunication was, the decorations should have stayed up. This country helps celebrate all religions. At this time of year, we should all embrace.”

Several expressed anger and threatened to boycott the supermarket.

One wrote: “This boils my blood. It’s Britain, we celebrate Christmas.”

Another said: “Won’t be shopping at Morrisons or any supermarket that doesn’t support Christmas.”

Local Cllr Susan Priest said: “Bolton is a multi-faith place. We celebrate it all. I want to see seasonal decorations going up for all of the different celebrations throughout the year, including Christmas. That’s what makes Bolton a great place.

“I think it’s probably been blown out of proportion, to be honest.”

In a statement, Morrisons said: “We have Christmas decorations up at our Atlas Mill store to help make our customers and colleagues feel festive at this special time of year.

“Following a miscommunication some were removed, however they have been reinstated and the store and our colleagues are excited to continue to help our customers celebrate Christmas.”

The spokesperson also said they are “looking into” the miscommunication and said they would not be providing “any further comment” at this time.
