Bondi Beach terror attack latest: What you need to know
- A funeral was held for 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim, who died in front of her sister during the horror Bondi Beach terror attack. Her aunt urged people to “spread happiness and love” in her memory.
- Matilda’s father praised an unidentified woman who shielded their younger daughter by hugging her for the entire 10-minute shooting. Separately, 78-year-old Tibor Weitzen died shielding his loved ones.
- British-born Eli, 41, the ‘Bondi Rabbi,’ was killed at the Hanukkah festival event he helped organise. He was laid to rest and praised for spreading love and caring for his community.
- The attack involved two Isis-inspired gunmen who opened fire on families celebrating the Jewish holy festival of Hanukkah. The incident is the country’s deadliest shooting since 1996.
- The massacre resulted in 15 confirmed victims. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated the attack appeared to have been “motivated by Islamic State” group ideology.
- Shooting suspect Naveed Akram, 24, has woken from a coma and now faces 15 counts of murder and 44 other charges. A court was convened at his hospital bedside to ensure he understood the charges.
- Akram’s hearing has been adjourned until April 2026. His accomplice, father Sajid Akram, 50, was killed in a shootout with police.
