Lunch: England in complete disarray at 3-59 from 14 overs
What seemed like it would be an absolute punish of a day for the Aussies has turned into an explosive turnaround in favour of the hosts – with another big controversy thrown in.
Cummins snagged Crawley with a fine ball, Ollie Pope has quite possibly ended his Test career with an absolute brain-explosion of a shot, before Nathan Lyon bowled Duckett with an absolute peach.
Had the review found that Carey got the barest hint of glove under that nick from Root, England would have been in a hole a mile deep.
‘What on earth was that?’
Mail cricket correspondent Lawrence Booth doesn’t mince his words about Pope’s play…
You can’t blame Zak Crawley for getting a good one from Pat Cummins, but what on earth was that from Ollie Pope? A horrible shot from a player who has surely run out of rope. And then Nathan Lyon bowls Ben Duckett with a beauty. England in tatters already!
A look at yet another Carey controversy
Did he get some glove under it?
Just a reminder that if there’s the slightest shadow of a doubt in a situation like this, the batter gets the benefit.
England 3-42 after overs
In news that will surprise nobody, Alex Carey is already being called a cheat online after that incredibly close call for Root.
What an insane turnaround we’ve just seen. England looked comfortable and in control, with the Aussie pacemen wilting a bit, before the Cummins scalp started a mini collapse.
NOT OUT! Root survives… just
The review umpire has found there was a bit of ‘ball on ground’ but my word, that was a close call for the Lions there.
I could get deported for saying this, but it looks like the right call to me.
Did Carey glove it?
Snicko has detected an edge but there’s a lot of doubt about whether Carey got under that ball…
Huge appeal! Over to Snicko…
Boland thinks he has Root caught behind for just one.
Snicko is going to be tested here.
WICKET! Duckett bowled by Lyon for 29, England 3-42
He found some turn and beat the outside edge of the bat there and England are suddenly in all sorts.
Lyon now goes ahead of Glenn McGrath as an Aussie Test wicket taker.
WICKET! Pope goes for 3, bowled Lyon, caught Inglis
Now that is just poor from Pope, a half-hearted drive to the leg side that is scooped up by Josh Inglis.
It was a nice catch, vaguely reminiscent of Crawley’s screamer yesterday as he stretched out for it, but it was a far simpler chance.
Pope is shaking his head as he comes off. That’s up there with the Head, Green and Labuschagne dismissals yesterday when it comes to awful play from the batsman.
Boland into the attack with a maiden, England 1-40
Lovely over from Boland. He strikes Pope with a nasty, rearing delivery that got a bit of movement off the pitch.
The last ball of the over sees Pope show some misplaced aggression and almost edge it.
Crawley’s mistake pinpointed, England 1-40 after 8 overs
Justin Langer has pointed to Crawley bringing his right leg around as he played that defensive stroke, saying it shows he wasn’t sufficiently committed on the front foot.
WICKET! Zak Crawley gone for 9 as Cummins draws an edge
There it is! Cummins has been toiling a bit but he gets Crawley with a ball that does just enough in the corridor of uncertainty, seam wobbling. Carey takes a regulation catch.
