A pre-match snack turned into a medical emergency for a luckless footy fan who stopped off for a curry on the way to watch his team lose 1-0.

Posting on Facebook, the Bristol City fan revealed that he’s “fighting fit” again after a successful operation, but his photos from his away-day adventure reveal how close he came to tragedy.

Along with a selfie in a hospital bed giving a thumbs-up, the bearded supporter of The Robins also posted a shocking image of a huge splinter of wood in a plastic jar, revealing what surgeons had to fish out of his throat after fast food left him in peril.

“Wasn’t feeling myself at Coventry away,” he revealed on Facebook.

“Turns out something I had to eat before the game has a bit of wood which got lodged in my throat. Successful op and removal and will be fighting fit for my trip down for Boro this weekend. God bless the NHS.”

Bristol City lost 1-0 at Coventry but the Cider Army fan’s real problems began, he reckons, with a curry he scoffed before the game. “Nice curry but not worth this!”

A fellow fan suggested the splinter could have come from a kebab stick: “Looks like kebab stick they use to cook the meat on. Go back and tell them. Get well soon, mate.”

Another Red Army stalwart advised him to head back for free grub: “Deffo go back and tell them. May get free curries. Glad you’re OK.”

The recovering footy fan also posted a pic of the curry whose secret ingredient he blamed for his urgent trip to A&E, presumably snapped before he started to feel unwell. The curry can be seen in a plastic box with a wooden spoon or fork tucked into the mix of rice and meat.
