In an extraordinary tirade during his annual TV address, Vladimir Putin has levelled accusations of “burglary” at European Union leaders.

The Russian President made the remark as he criticised European nations for utilising Russia’s frozen assets to finance the Ukrainian military.

He stated: “It’s burglary. The consequences are very serious for the burglars.”, reports the Mirror.

The EU agreed a 90billion Euro loan to fund Ukraine‘s defence last night. Many European leaders wished to directly use Russian assets frozen in EU countries, worth around 200bn euros, to fund Ukraine. However, legal concerns from Belgium, where most of the assets are held, sparked the bloc to agree on the loan instead.

Putin said there will be “serious consequences” over the EU’s efforts to fund his enemy – comparing the countries involved to “burglars” for targeting Russian assets. He added Russia will defend itself in courts, in a jurisdiction that is not dependent on political decisions.

He said Europe will be made to give back what it “steals” from Russia’s assets. Mad Vlad also claimed the country’s finances in terms of national were in a better state than France’s.
